Narrative:
We were level at FL310 expecting further clearance to FL350 with 8 passenger on board. I left the cockpit to pass out catering and drinks and returned approximately 10 mins later and stood between and behind the crew seats. The captain had a lap full of maps and paperwork when we received a clearance to climb from FL310 to FL350 but the captain missed the call so I leaned over the seat and acknowledged the clearance. The captain reached up to the flight guidance controller to initiate the climb but did not reset the altitude select controller. A few mins later I returned to my crew seat and soon after we were notified by center that we were 400 ft above our assigned altitude. Before we could reverse the trend we were 900 ft above our altitude. I believe that deviation from standard procedure contributed to this mistake and in the future will only accept flight crew duties when I am in my seat and able to complete all of my duties.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CORPORATE JET OVERSHOT ASSIGNED ALT DURING CLB. ALTDEV ALT OVERSHOT.
Narrative: WE WERE LEVEL AT FL310 EXPECTING FURTHER CLRNC TO FL350 WITH 8 PAX ON BOARD. I LEFT THE COCKPIT TO PASS OUT CATERING AND DRINKS AND RETURNED APPROX 10 MINS LATER AND STOOD BTWN AND BEHIND THE CREW SEATS. THE CAPT HAD A LAP FULL OF MAPS AND PAPERWORK WHEN WE RECEIVED A CLRNC TO CLB FROM FL310 TO FL350 BUT THE CAPT MISSED THE CALL SO I LEANED OVER THE SEAT AND ACKNOWLEDGED THE CLRNC. THE CAPT REACHED UP TO THE FLT GUIDANCE CTLR TO INITIATE THE CLB BUT DID NOT RESET THE ALT SELECT CTLR. A FEW MINS LATER I RETURNED TO MY CREW SEAT AND SOON AFTER WE WERE NOTIFIED BY CTR THAT WE WERE 400 FT ABOVE OUR ASSIGNED ALT. BEFORE WE COULD REVERSE THE TREND WE WERE 900 FT ABOVE OUR ALT. I BELIEVE THAT DEV FROM STANDARD PROC CONTRIBUTED TO THIS MISTAKE AND IN THE FUTURE WILL ONLY ACCEPT FLC DUTIES WHEN I AM IN MY SEAT AND ABLE TO COMPLETE ALL OF MY DUTIES.
