Narrative:
Took off on VFR ferry from sby to cho, set coordinates of restr airspace in RNAV, thought we were skirting the edge of a restr area, but RNAV lost signal and gave erroneous information. This caused us to enter restr area by approximately 5 mi and 700 ft. When requested VFR flight following we asked passenger river for information on keeping clear of the restr area and advised them of our requested altitude of 14500 ft. We were then alerted of our mistake and immediately initiated a rapid descent to clear the airspace. No conflicts were reported and ATC seemed to be 'low key' about the event. To remedy future problems like this I should have made our route and altitude intentions more clear to approach and double-checked the RNAV's ability to lock onto a signal.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC ENTERED RESTR AREA.
Narrative: TOOK OFF ON VFR FERRY FROM SBY TO CHO, SET COORDINATES OF RESTR AIRSPACE IN RNAV, THOUGHT WE WERE SKIRTING THE EDGE OF A RESTR AREA, BUT RNAV LOST SIGNAL AND GAVE ERRONEOUS INFO. THIS CAUSED US TO ENTER RESTR AREA BY APPROX 5 MI AND 700 FT. WHEN REQUESTED VFR FLT FOLLOWING WE ASKED PAX RIVER FOR INFO ON KEEPING CLR OF THE RESTR AREA AND ADVISED THEM OF OUR REQUESTED ALT OF 14500 FT. WE WERE THEN ALERTED OF OUR MISTAKE AND IMMEDIATELY INITIATED A RAPID DSCNT TO CLR THE AIRSPACE. NO CONFLICTS WERE RPTED AND ATC SEEMED TO BE 'LOW KEY' ABOUT THE EVENT. TO REMEDY FUTURE PROBS LIKE THIS I SHOULD HAVE MADE OUR RTE AND ALT INTENTIONS MORE CLR TO APCH AND DOUBLE-CHKED THE RNAV'S ABILITY TO LOCK ONTO A SIGNAL.
