Narrative:

While descending from 12000 ft to 9000 ft MSL, we were given traffic at 1-2 O'clock eastbound at 10500 ft (we were sbound). We did not have him visually and leveled at 11000 ft as TCASII showed constant bearing and decreasing range. Approach told us we could remain there (delay our descent to 9000 ft) until we were clear of traffic. Since we did not have him visually, we climbed to 11500 ft (1000 ft separation). As TCASII called 'traffic, traffic,' we made visual contact and descended to 9000 ft.
