Narrative:
Student departed VOR on V3, rather than V30. I did not detect his error immediately as ATC gave us a confusing message about being 4 mi from sbj and leading us to believe that we had not gotten there yet. ATC vector to correct airway was followed and flight continued normally.

Title: INST STUDENT INTERCEPTS THE WRONG AIRWAY RESULTING IN ATC INTERVENTION DURING TRAINING FLT WITH INSTRUCTOR.
Narrative: STUDENT DEPARTED VOR ON V3, RATHER THAN V30. I DID NOT DETECT HIS ERROR IMMEDIATELY AS ATC GAVE US A CONFUSING MESSAGE ABOUT BEING 4 MI FROM SBJ AND LEADING US TO BELIEVE THAT WE HAD NOT GOTTEN THERE YET. ATC VECTOR TO CORRECT AIRWAY WAS FOLLOWED AND FLT CONTINUED NORMALLY.
