Narrative:
After departing sjc as we approached czq -- ZLA gave us RNAV direct bld. Track change was made on the omega and bld was tuned into the VOR. Because of distance and terrain the VOR was not yet receiving bld. About 5 mins after crossing czq ZLA asked if we were proceeding direct to bld. We were not. Bty had inadvertently been selected for the track change. We were re-cleared direct bld. The error had taken us on a heading about 10 degrees left of course for approximately 7 mins.
