Narrative:
On taxi for takeoff, we were cleared to taxi to 'runway 36 hold short runway 3' follow air carrier Y. Air carrier Y departed. We were advised to now 'hold short runway 36, landing traffic.' the hold short line for runway 3/21 was clearly marked on the taxiway. There appeared to be a hold short area for runway 36 where runway 18/36 was announced by a sign. When we pulled up to that area, I saw several lines, but nothing clearly. I immediately stopped well clear of runway 36 but was not in sight of a hold short line. The controller was very vocal in making sure we were clear of runway 36, which we assured him 3 or 4 times. I think the controller thought we were going to hold short of runway 3, even though he cleared us to hold short of runway 36. I suggest for all operations at lse that no clrncs be issued to hold short of runway 36, regardless of which runway is used (runways 3 or 36) due to the proximity and limited lighting. You might also put a small lighted sign up 'hold short runways 3/21 18/37' on both sides of taxiway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF AN MLG FAILED TO HOLD SHORT AT THE EXACT DESIGNED HOLD SHORT LINE.
Narrative: ON TAXI FOR TKOF, WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI TO 'RWY 36 HOLD SHORT RWY 3' FOLLOW ACR Y. ACR Y DEPARTED. WE WERE ADVISED TO NOW 'HOLD SHORT RWY 36, LNDG TFC.' THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 3/21 WAS CLRLY MARKED ON THE TXWY. THERE APPEARED TO BE A HOLD SHORT AREA FOR RWY 36 WHERE RWY 18/36 WAS ANNOUNCED BY A SIGN. WHEN WE PULLED UP TO THAT AREA, I SAW SEVERAL LINES, BUT NOTHING CLRLY. I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED WELL CLR OF RWY 36 BUT WAS NOT IN SIGHT OF A HOLD SHORT LINE. THE CTLR WAS VERY VOCAL IN MAKING SURE WE WERE CLR OF RWY 36, WHICH WE ASSURED HIM 3 OR 4 TIMES. I THINK THE CTLR THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 3, EVEN THOUGH HE CLRED US TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 36. I SUGGEST FOR ALL OPS AT LSE THAT NO CLRNCS BE ISSUED TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 36, REGARDLESS OF WHICH RWY IS USED (RWYS 3 OR 36) DUE TO THE PROX AND LIMITED LIGHTING. YOU MIGHT ALSO PUT A SMALL LIGHTED SIGN UP 'HOLD SHORT RWYS 3/21 18/37' ON BOTH SIDES OF TXWY.
