Narrative:
En route from nogales, az, to phoenix sky harbor to drop off friends for a commercial flight back to california. I am a 20000 hour (air carrier X) B767 captain and the friend in the right seat is a 15000 hour (air carrier Y) B767 captain. We are both ex-military pilots. We had a complete WX briefing in nogales, az, and there were no visibility restrs or ceiling. As airline pilots we discussed the value of radar flight following for both ourselves and air carrier safety. So immediately after takeoff we requested radar flight following from tucson and were given a squawk and advised that we were in radar contact. We were switched once to another tus approach frequency and then handed off to ZAB. We were asked what was our destination and would we like flight following all the way. My 15000 hour copilot advised that we would appreciate that. After about 10-15 mins listening to ZAB working other aircraft we were given a frequency and told to contact phx approach which we did and were promptly advised that we were already in the class B airspace and were given a 360 degree turn and shortly switched to another controller and landed uneventfully. Both my copilot and I were completely surprised that our efforts to work within the system to ensure maximum safety in a small aircraft had come to such an end. I called phx approach immediately and was advised that ZAB had been late in handing us off and that no violation would be filed. Next time, I'll monitor my progress toward the class B closely and speak up if getting close!
