Narrative:

Reported kiln without an IFR release. Factors: 1) new to company. First flight with company oct/95. 2) first time for daytime operations with company. 3) tower is open during night operations only. 4) during push back asked company for transponder code since we didn't receive one, normally given during push back. 5) received transponder code after we asked for it, but not told to hold for release by company. 6) WX was clear and visibility unrestr. Upon contacting day departure, day departure asked how we were released. Caught both the captain and first officer by surprise, since captain and first officer are used to the tower operating during nighttime operations. Suggestions: always check what hours tower is operational and who has control of the airspace. Company should state: 'transponder code, hold for release or released' or 'contact day departure prior to takeoff for IFR release and transponder code.'
