Narrative:
As we were taxiing out to runway 19R on taxiway east, ground control told us to taxi to runway 19R and after crossing runway 13/31 to fall in behind the airbus. The confusion occurred because there were 2 airbuses, one in the runway 19R run-up area and one taxiing on taxiway G and slightly behind us. So we crossed runway 13/31 and were going to get behind the airbus in the run-up area, thinking ground was planning to have the aircraft pass us both up and takeoff first. Once we crossed runway 13/31 and kept taxiing, ground control called and asked what we were doing since he'd told us to get behind the airbus. That's when we realized ground wanted us behind the second aircraft. If ground control really wanted us behind the second aircraft, I was surprised he didn't hold us short of runway 13/31 or the intersection of taxiway G instead of 'fall in behind the airbus.' as far as I know no corrective action was taken, just the takeoff sequence was altered and we went ahead of the second aircraft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF AN MLG MISUNDERSTOOD TAXI INSTRUCTIONS AND FAILED TO FOLLOW THE INTENDED RTE.
Narrative: AS WE WERE TAXIING OUT TO RWY 19R ON TXWY E, GND CTL TOLD US TO TAXI TO RWY 19R AND AFTER XING RWY 13/31 TO FALL IN BEHIND THE AIRBUS. THE CONFUSION OCCURRED BECAUSE THERE WERE 2 AIRBUSES, ONE IN THE RWY 19R RUN-UP AREA AND ONE TAXIING ON TXWY G AND SLIGHTLY BEHIND US. SO WE CROSSED RWY 13/31 AND WERE GOING TO GET BEHIND THE AIRBUS IN THE RUN-UP AREA, THINKING GND WAS PLANNING TO HAVE THE ACFT PASS US BOTH UP AND TKOF FIRST. ONCE WE CROSSED RWY 13/31 AND KEPT TAXIING, GND CTL CALLED AND ASKED WHAT WE WERE DOING SINCE HE'D TOLD US TO GET BEHIND THE AIRBUS. THAT'S WHEN WE REALIZED GND WANTED US BEHIND THE SECOND ACFT. IF GND CTL REALLY WANTED US BEHIND THE SECOND ACFT, I WAS SURPRISED HE DIDN'T HOLD US SHORT OF RWY 13/31 OR THE INTXN OF TXWY G INSTEAD OF 'FALL IN BEHIND THE AIRBUS.' AS FAR AS I KNOW NO CORRECTIVE ACTION WAS TAKEN, JUST THE TKOF SEQUENCE WAS ALTERED AND WE WENT AHEAD OF THE SECOND ACFT.
