Narrative:

Takeoff briefing was conducted before a lengthy delay. At departure the runway and conditions were still the same so first officer just said 'as previously briefed' at that point of the checklist. I let that stand, not realizing that somewhere along the line the first officer rethought the departure procedure. After takeoff he made a right turn at 400 ft AGL on a departure that required departing on runway heading. No conflict resulted, to my knowledge. The only cure to this problem would be to brief during taxi as is normal operating procedure.
