Narrative:

On VFR flight northbound to hpn (white plains), cleared into ny class B and being vectored awaiting handoff to approach for hpn which was very busy. During one leg of vector, passenger tuned #2 communication to get hpn WX and, unknown to me, turned volume to zero on #1 communication which was our controling frequency. After a few mins of quiet we realized what had happened and turned on volume and reestablished communications. Controller was justifiably upset. We apologized. Passenger (an experienced pilot) knows better but had gotten only a few hours sleep the night before and was not thinking clearly. I shouldn't have let him touch anything.
