Narrative:

After making a position report at erwen, I requested clearance to deviate 20 NM north of R577 to avoid potentially dangerous WX. We were painting some strong cells on the airway and many more to the south. We were denied clearance to deviate north because of the proximity of R576 which parallels R577 about 50 NM to the north. I replied that I would have to use my captain's emergency authority/authorized and that we would be deviating 20 NM north of R577. We reported back on course before reaching exams and we were never more than 20 NM from the airway.
