Narrative:

Captain was flying, I was talking on radio, on departure level 5000 ft when departure control switched us to ZAU. I was checking in and noticed captain climbing the airplane. I reconfirmed with him clearance was to maintain 5000 ft. He then began to descend to 5000 ft. We reached 5250 ft MSL before descent. Center questioned our altitude and we confirmed 5000 ft MSL. The captain later stated that he was 'spring loaded' to climb when the switch to center was made.
