Narrative:
We crossed seal beach VOR on vectors for a visual approach to lax's south complex. Socal approach advised us of another aircraft, a jet which was inbound from the east. We were told to follow the jet and 'pull up next to,' but not pass this aircraft. We contacted the tower, the jet aircraft commenced a go around and we landed without incident. The confusion came from the instructions to pull up alongside the jet. From our position this instruction seemed to imply the use of runway 25L, however, the tower controller later told us to switch to runway 25L. Our assigned heading made it impossible to know which runway the jet was aligned with.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: BASED ON ALLEGED ATC INSTRUCTIONS, THE FLC OF AN SMT TURBOPROP COMMUTER PULLED UP ALONGSIDE ANOTHER ACFT DURING A VISUAL APCH RESULTING IN ANOTHER ACFT GOING AROUND. LACK OF COM UNDERSTANDING BY THE FLC OF THE REAL DESIRE OF ATC'S INSTRUCTIONS APPEAR TO BE THE CAUSE OF THIS INCIDENT.
Narrative: WE CROSSED SEAL BEACH VOR ON VECTORS FOR A VISUAL APCH TO LAX'S S COMPLEX. SOCAL APCH ADVISED US OF ANOTHER ACFT, A JET WHICH WAS INBOUND FROM THE E. WE WERE TOLD TO FOLLOW THE JET AND 'PULL UP NEXT TO,' BUT NOT PASS THIS ACFT. WE CONTACTED THE TWR, THE JET ACFT COMMENCED A GAR AND WE LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE CONFUSION CAME FROM THE INSTRUCTIONS TO PULL UP ALONGSIDE THE JET. FROM OUR POS THIS INSTRUCTION SEEMED TO IMPLY THE USE OF RWY 25L, HOWEVER, THE TWR CTLR LATER TOLD US TO SWITCH TO RWY 25L. OUR ASSIGNED HDG MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO KNOW WHICH RWY THE JET WAS ALIGNED WITH.
