Narrative:
Primary cause of this, off course event, was an inadequate transfer of flying duties from one pilot to the other. Just east of zuni the captain was given control of the aircraft, so that for currency purposes he could make the eventual landing. Transfer (switching) of the in use 'B' autoplt to the new pilot's 'a' autoplt was overlooked. New pilot tuned in zuni on navigation #1, and selected VOR/localizer with the 'B' autoplt engaged. The in use autoplt was armed to capture not zuni but phoenix, which was properly selected in navigation #2. The controller pointed out our deviation from course, we discovered the cause and corrected. No other aircraft were involved.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: TRANSFERRING CTL OF ACFT BTWN FO AND CAPT, FO AUTOPLT #2 WAS PROGRAMMED DIFFERENTLY THAN NEW CLRNC. CAPT SELECTED NEW CLRNC ON NAV #1, BUT LEFT THE #2 AUTOPLT ON, RESULTING IN A HDG DEV.
Narrative: PRIMARY CAUSE OF THIS, OFF COURSE EVENT, WAS AN INADEQUATE TRANSFER OF FLYING DUTIES FROM ONE PLT TO THE OTHER. JUST E OF ZUNI THE CAPT WAS GIVEN CTL OF THE ACFT, SO THAT FOR CURRENCY PURPOSES HE COULD MAKE THE EVENTUAL LNDG. TRANSFER (SWITCHING) OF THE IN USE 'B' AUTOPLT TO THE NEW PLT'S 'A' AUTOPLT WAS OVERLOOKED. NEW PLT TUNED IN ZUNI ON NAV #1, AND SELECTED VOR/LOC WITH THE 'B' AUTOPLT ENGAGED. THE IN USE AUTOPLT WAS ARMED TO CAPTURE NOT ZUNI BUT PHOENIX, WHICH WAS PROPERLY SELECTED IN NAV #2. THE CTLR POINTED OUT OUR DEV FROM COURSE, WE DISCOVERED THE CAUSE AND CORRECTED. NO OTHER ACFT WERE INVOLVED.
