Narrative:
Cruise FL240 autoplt engaged altitude hold on. Aircraft began 100 FPM climb, autoplt fighting it. Autoplt was disengaged, aircraft pitched 10 degrees up and began 2000 FPM climb. Altitude gained was 500 ft FL245. Aircraft was recovered less aggressively than is allowable, due to crew member in transit to back of aircraft. Pilot was afraid of injuring crew member. No center warnings or deviations were called out. Autoplt was written up as discrepancy for maintenance. Aircraft was hand flown for remainder of flight. Aircraft was on a celestial navigation leg between little rock AFB and knoxville. Completion of flight was uneventful.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: THE C130 AUTOPLT ALT HOLD WAS UNSUCCESSFUL IN MAINTAINING ALT ON A CELESTIAL NAV TRAINING FLT BTWN LITTLE ROCK AND KNOXVILLE. WHEN THE CREW DISENGAGED THE AUTOPLT THE C130 PITCHED UP 10 DEGS TO A RATE OF CLB OF 2000 FPM. THE ACFT CLBED 500 FT BEFORE THE C130 COULD BE BROUGHT BACK TO ITS ASSIGNED ALT GRACEFULLY. THE REMAINDER OF THE FLT WAS COMPLETED UNEVENTFULLY BY HAND FLYING.
