Narrative:
Climbing out from buf, ATC cleared us to FL270. Another controller later cleared us to a heading of 255 degrees and direct to dryer (djb, 113.6). Approaching FL260 during the climb to FL270 at a rate of 1200 FPM, we got a TA/RA on TCASII. We monitored vertical speed and descended to FL257 and visually acquired the traffic. The traffic passed in our vicinity at FL270. ZOB pointed the traffic out about the same time we started a descent. After the TA/RA resolved we leveled off at FL260. When we queried the controller about the TCASII incident, he told us he had cleared us to FL260 at the time he gave us the 255 degree heading. Nobody on the crew could recall a FL260 hold down but we all copied and complied with the 255 degree heading. ATC said the aircraft at FL270 also initiated a TA/RA action. Good that TA/RA worked to resolve conflict and that controller also pointed out our traffic. Not good that verification of altitude change was not received.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B727 FLC RECEIVES TCASII TA THEN RA. TAKES EVASIVE ACTION, ACQUIRES TFC. CTLR SAYS CLRED TO FL260, NOT FL270.
Narrative: CLBING OUT FROM BUF, ATC CLRED US TO FL270. ANOTHER CTLR LATER CLRED US TO A HDG OF 255 DEGS AND DIRECT TO DRYER (DJB, 113.6). APCHING FL260 DURING THE CLB TO FL270 AT A RATE OF 1200 FPM, WE GOT A TA/RA ON TCASII. WE MONITORED VERT SPD AND DSNDED TO FL257 AND VISUALLY ACQUIRED THE TFC. THE TFC PASSED IN OUR VICINITY AT FL270. ZOB POINTED THE TFC OUT ABOUT THE SAME TIME WE STARTED A DSCNT. AFTER THE TA/RA RESOLVED WE LEVELED OFF AT FL260. WHEN WE QUERIED THE CTLR ABOUT THE TCASII INCIDENT, HE TOLD US HE HAD CLRED US TO FL260 AT THE TIME HE GAVE US THE 255 DEG HDG. NOBODY ON THE CREW COULD RECALL A FL260 HOLD DOWN BUT WE ALL COPIED AND COMPLIED WITH THE 255 DEG HDG. ATC SAID THE ACFT AT FL270 ALSO INITIATED A TA/RA ACTION. GOOD THAT TA/RA WORKED TO RESOLVE CONFLICT AND THAT CTLR ALSO POINTED OUT OUR TFC. NOT GOOD THAT VERIFICATION OF ALT CHANGE WAS NOT RECEIVED.
