Narrative:
During approach to ord runway 14R, after contacting the tower just inside the OM, we were issued a hold-short restr against runway 27L. No previous mention had been made by approach control. No mention had been included on the ATIS used by us for check-in, which we confirmed to still be current after we cleared the runway. It was a last min distraction during a high- winds operation that was not needed. I have debriefed this occurrence before, about ord. In speaking with pilot acquaintances in our airline, I have confirmed this is apparently an ongoing problem that presents a real safety hazard to ord operations.
