Narrative:
On STAR into dca we received direct manne clearance. Since this intersection was not in the arnav's route list, captain entered manne and commanded autoplt to go direct, but did not list manne in the arnav's route list. After manne, aircraft flew on straight (I'm not sure if autoplt was on navigation mode or heading mode) and did not turn to aml, our next waypoint. Within 1 min, approach asked if we were going to aml at which time we corrected and turned on course. I just thought this was interesting in light of the cali, colombia, crash. It should be stressed that even in aircraft with sophisticated and reliable navigation equipment, the pilot still has to 'fly' the autoplt. It didn't mess up, we did!

Title: CAPT OF AN MDT FAILED TO REPROGRAM ARR ROUTING PROPERLY IN THE FMC RESULTING IN ATC INTERVENTION TO ALERT CREW OF THEIR WRONG TRACK AND BRING THEM BACK TO ASSIGNED ARR RTE.
Narrative: ON STAR INTO DCA WE RECEIVED DIRECT MANNE CLRNC. SINCE THIS INTXN WAS NOT IN THE ARNAV'S RTE LIST, CAPT ENTERED MANNE AND COMMANDED AUTOPLT TO GO DIRECT, BUT DID NOT LIST MANNE IN THE ARNAV'S RTE LIST. AFTER MANNE, ACFT FLEW ON STRAIGHT (I'M NOT SURE IF AUTOPLT WAS ON NAV MODE OR HDG MODE) AND DID NOT TURN TO AML, OUR NEXT WAYPOINT. WITHIN 1 MIN, APCH ASKED IF WE WERE GOING TO AML AT WHICH TIME WE CORRECTED AND TURNED ON COURSE. I JUST THOUGHT THIS WAS INTERESTING IN LIGHT OF THE CALI, COLOMBIA, CRASH. IT SHOULD BE STRESSED THAT EVEN IN ACFT WITH SOPHISTICATED AND RELIABLE NAV EQUIP, THE PLT STILL HAS TO 'FLY' THE AUTOPLT. IT DIDN'T MESS UP, WE DID!
