Narrative:
Our flight was cleared to active runway. Subsequently we observed a foreign air carrier's B747 which had pushed back into alley. We proceeded around the aircraft on the right side, wingtip clearance from our perspective being maintained. Other air carrier's ground personnel later claimed that our wingtips had overlapped. From my perspective it appeared that there was no conflict whatsoever. Supplemental information from acn 326880: captain qualified first officer in the left seat claimed clearance was maintained throughout. The foreign air carrier's observers were near the nose of their aircraft and a possible parallax from their perspective may have made it look like wingtips overlapped. Additionally, we thought this maneuver had been approved by ground since they gave us clearance to taxi and were aware of the B747. This was not necessarily a valid assumption on my part.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A FOREIGN ACR'S B747 OBSERVERS ACCUSED MLG ACR FLC OF OVERLAPPING WINGTIPS DURING TAXI. THE QUALIFIED CAPT TAXIING (WHO HAD BEEN ASSIGNED SIC) HAD MAINTAINED WINGTIP CLRNC FROM HIS PERSPECTIVE IN THE COCKPIT. POTENTIAL GND CONFLICT.
Narrative: OUR FLT WAS CLRED TO ACTIVE RWY. SUBSEQUENTLY WE OBSERVED A FOREIGN ACR'S B747 WHICH HAD PUSHED BACK INTO ALLEY. WE PROCEEDED AROUND THE ACFT ON THE R SIDE, WINGTIP CLRNC FROM OUR PERSPECTIVE BEING MAINTAINED. OTHER ACR'S GND PERSONNEL LATER CLAIMED THAT OUR WINGTIPS HAD OVERLAPPED. FROM MY PERSPECTIVE IT APPEARED THAT THERE WAS NO CONFLICT WHATSOEVER. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 326880: CAPT QUALIFIED FO IN THE L SEAT CLAIMED CLRNC WAS MAINTAINED THROUGHOUT. THE FOREIGN ACR'S OBSERVERS WERE NEAR THE NOSE OF THEIR ACFT AND A POSSIBLE PARALLAX FROM THEIR PERSPECTIVE MAY HAVE MADE IT LOOK LIKE WINGTIPS OVERLAPPED. ADDITIONALLY, WE THOUGHT THIS MANEUVER HAD BEEN APPROVED BY GND SINCE THEY GAVE US CLRNC TO TAXI AND WERE AWARE OF THE B747. THIS WAS NOT NECESSARILY A VALID ASSUMPTION ON MY PART.
