Narrative:
On vector to vny in IMC conditions, we were avoiding a WX area off to our right which overlayed the arrival to van nuys (lynxx 7 STAR). Socal gave us descent to 5000 ft. GPWS indicated 'terrain, terrain.' an evasive maneuver was executed. We were told to climb to 6000 ft, we continued to 7000 ft before GPWS warning was silenced. ATC continued to try to vector us into WX area. Eventually we were vectored to OM and given a tight left turn back to ILS runway 16R at vny. After continually telling socal of WX area, and socal saying that their WX radar was inoperative, we eventually got onto ILS. Socal was of no help in avoiding WX area and climb was required to silence GPWS warning.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: THE FLC HAD DIFFICULTY AVOIDING WX AND STAYING ON THE LYNXX 7 ARR AND FOLLOWING ATC GUIDANCE. THE TRACON NEEDED THE FLT TO GO WHERE THE WX WAS. TO COMPLICATE THE PROB THE GPWS WENT OFF REQUIRING THE CREW TO CLB TO 7000 FT WHEN THE TRACON CALLED FOR 6000 FT.
