Primary Problem | ATC Human Performance |
Narrative:
Top of/during descent (approximately 80 mi from the hnl airport) ATC cleared aircraft to maintain heading to intercept the lda runway 26L. At that distance the localizer and DME were not reliable and required an additional ATC vector to properly intercept the localizer inbound course. Localizer lda and DME were intermittent and appeared to be less than reliable.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A DC9 EXPERIENCED DIFFICULTY INTERCEPTING AND FOLLOWING THE LDA APCH TO HNL DUE TO THE 80 MI DISTANCE AWAY AND POSSIBLE RADIO RECEIVER MALFUNCTION.
Narrative: TOP OF/DURING DSCNT (APPROX 80 MI FROM THE HNL ARPT) ATC CLRED ACFT TO MAINTAIN HDG TO INTERCEPT THE LDA RWY 26L. AT THAT DISTANCE THE LOC AND DME WERE NOT RELIABLE AND REQUIRED AN ADDITIONAL ATC VECTOR TO PROPERLY INTERCEPT THE LOC INBOUND COURSE. LOC LDA AND DME WERE INTERMITTENT AND APPEARED TO BE LESS THAN RELIABLE.
