Narrative:

The flight had been night IMC. We were level at 2500 ft and being vectored by mke approach control to the localizer runway 25 approach to mke. We had briefed the approach with all pertinent altitudes, courses, and fixes during the accomplishment of the descent checklist. The last clearance we had received was clearance for the approach with a heading to intercept the final approach course with instructions to 'maintain 2500 ft until established.' upon interception of the final approach course at approximately 12 DME, we began a descent to the MDA, apparently not realizing that we were still outside of the FAF. As we descended through 1500 ft, the controller told us that he needed us to stay at 2500 ft and to climb immediately to 2500 ft. We immediately began a climb in compliance with his instructions. Upon reaching 2500 ft we reviewed the approach chart again and realized our mistake. Fortunately, at the time we were over lake michigan and therefore safe from any type of CFIT incident.

Title: FLC OF A BAE31 DSNDED BELOW FINAL APCH ALT OUTSIDE OF THE FAF CAUSING AN ATC LOW ALT WARNING DUE TO FORGETTING THAT THEY WERE STILL OUTSIDE THE OM.

Narrative: THE FLT HAD BEEN NIGHT IMC. WE WERE LEVEL AT 2500 FT AND BEING VECTORED BY MKE APCH CTL TO THE LOC RWY 25 APCH TO MKE. WE HAD BRIEFED THE APCH WITH ALL PERTINENT ALTS, COURSES, AND FIXES DURING THE ACCOMPLISHMENT OF THE DSCNT CHKLIST. THE LAST CLRNC WE HAD RECEIVED WAS CLRNC FOR THE APCH WITH A HDG TO INTERCEPT THE FINAL APCH COURSE WITH INSTRUCTIONS TO 'MAINTAIN 2500 FT UNTIL ESTABLISHED.' UPON INTERCEPTION OF THE FINAL APCH COURSE AT APPROX 12 DME, WE BEGAN A DSCNT TO THE MDA, APPARENTLY NOT REALIZING THAT WE WERE STILL OUTSIDE OF THE FAF. AS WE DSNDED THROUGH 1500 FT, THE CTLR TOLD US THAT HE NEEDED US TO STAY AT 2500 FT AND TO CLB IMMEDIATELY TO 2500 FT. WE IMMEDIATELY BEGAN A CLB IN COMPLIANCE WITH HIS INSTRUCTIONS. UPON REACHING 2500 FT WE REVIEWED THE APCH CHART AGAIN AND REALIZED OUR MISTAKE. FORTUNATELY, AT THE TIME WE WERE OVER LAKE MICHIGAN AND THEREFORE SAFE FROM ANY TYPE OF CFIT INCIDENT.
