Narrative:
Departed runway 12R sjc and departure controller turned us right to sjc VOR and climb to FL230 with sjc at or above 12000 ft. On next frequency we checked in at 12300 ft and he said to stop climb at 13000 ft, that we missed an altitude of 12000 ft. So we stopped our climb at 13000 ft. Asked departure if he had a problem with us or any other aircraft! He said no!!
