Narrative:

On preflight the electrical and electronic compartment door was closed. On takeoff, after the gear came up, we couldn't pressurize the aircraft and we tried everything we could think of, but we couldn't pressurize and the associated noise didn't go away. After return to st louis the mechanics at the gate told us the electrical and electronic compartment door was open. Our cockpit light pressed to test, as in our preflight, but didn't show an open door at all. The mechanics shut the door, signed off the light (contact) and we took off. The rest of the flight was normal.
