Narrative:
During climb after departing atl we could not control cabin rate of climb. Declared emergency and executed emergency descent procedure. Returned to departure airport -- atl. Initially ATC would not grant 10000 ft that we requested -- an emergency had to be declared to get below FL240. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the B727-200 flight crew was unable to keep the cabin down so they told ATC that they needed an immediate descent. ATC descent clearance was not as expedient as required so the captain declared an emergency in order to get down before the cabin exceeded 10000 ft. An irregularity report was filed with the company. The captain received a form letter in return which did not cite maintenance action. The captain would have liked to have known what caused the problem and states that this kind of response doesn't do much for morale.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B727 FAILED TO MAINTAIN PRESSURIZATION DURING THE DEP CLB. AT FL270, THE FLC TOLD ATC THAT THEY NEEDED AN IMMEDIATE DSCNT. WHEN IT BECAME APPARENT THAT THE DSCNT CLRNCS WERE NOT GOING TO KEEP THE CABIN FROM EXCEEDING 10000 FT, THE FLC DECLARED AN EMER. RETURN LAND.
Narrative: DURING CLB AFTER DEPARTING ATL WE COULD NOT CTL CABIN RATE OF CLB. DECLARED EMER AND EXECUTED EMER DSCNT PROC. RETURNED TO DEP ARPT -- ATL. INITIALLY ATC WOULD NOT GRANT 10000 FT THAT WE REQUESTED -- AN EMER HAD TO BE DECLARED TO GET BELOW FL240. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE B727-200 FLC WAS UNABLE TO KEEP THE CABIN DOWN SO THEY TOLD ATC THAT THEY NEEDED AN IMMEDIATE DSCNT. ATC DSCNT CLRNC WAS NOT AS EXPEDIENT AS REQUIRED SO THE CAPT DECLARED AN EMER IN ORDER TO GET DOWN BEFORE THE CABIN EXCEEDED 10000 FT. AN IRREGULARITY RPT WAS FILED WITH THE COMPANY. THE CAPT RECEIVED A FORM LETTER IN RETURN WHICH DID NOT CITE MAINT ACTION. THE CAPT WOULD HAVE LIKED TO HAVE KNOWN WHAT CAUSED THE PROB AND STATES THAT THIS KIND OF RESPONSE DOESN'T DO MUCH FOR MORALE.
