Narrative:
Center asked if we could leave FL290 to arrive at FL350 in 5 mins or less. We said that we could, aircraft could not subsequently make FL350 in the allotted time, center had to vector us and another air carrier away from each other. The captain was insistent that the aircraft could climb at the requested rate, I told him on 4 different occasions that the airspeed was decaying. We got very slow in the climb, finally the captain allowed me to call center and tell them that the aircraft wasn't climbing. The captain has 10+ plus yrs in the DC9, he should have known that it couldn't do the climb rate requested by center.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR DC9 CAPT (PF) ATTEMPTED TO COMPLY WITH A CLB CLRNC. THE FO NOTED DECAYING AIRSPD AND ADVOCATED INFORMING CTR THAT THE FLC COULD NOT MAKE THE CLB IN THE TIME REQUESTED. ARTCC RADAR CTLR ISSUED VECOTRS TO MAINTAIN THE ACFT SEPARATION. POTENTIAL CONFLICT.
Narrative: CTR ASKED IF WE COULD LEAVE FL290 TO ARRIVE AT FL350 IN 5 MINS OR LESS. WE SAID THAT WE COULD, ACFT COULD NOT SUBSEQUENTLY MAKE FL350 IN THE ALLOTTED TIME, CTR HAD TO VECTOR US AND ANOTHER ACR AWAY FROM EACH OTHER. THE CAPT WAS INSISTENT THAT THE ACFT COULD CLB AT THE REQUESTED RATE, I TOLD HIM ON 4 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS THAT THE AIRSPD WAS DECAYING. WE GOT VERY SLOW IN THE CLB, FINALLY THE CAPT ALLOWED ME TO CALL CTR AND TELL THEM THAT THE ACFT WASN'T CLBING. THE CAPT HAS 10+ PLUS YRS IN THE DC9, HE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT IT COULDN'T DO THE CLB RATE REQUESTED BY CTR.
