Narrative:
I was PF. I departed runway 02R at nashville international in early morning. WX was clear, bright sunlight on departure. Initial turn to 045 degrees, and intercepted bna 068 degree radial per SID. Approximately 5 mi on departure approaching 3000 ft AGL, I spotted another aircraft approximately 1-2 mi ahead and slightly higher. I called out the traffic to the crew and immediately began an evasive maneuver to the right. Estimate miss about 800 ft vertically and about 1/4 mi horizontally on the captain's side. TCASII gave no visual or oral warning of traffic, and departure control offered no warning of traffic. After initiating my evasive turn to the right, departure control gave us a normal turn to 180 degrees, again with no indication of a traffic conflict. We queried departure control about the traffic, and were informed separation was about 900 ft vertical (fortunately, I had stopped the climb). Evidently, the other aircraft was in radar contact, but on a different frequency. Our departure controller either misjudged our flight path/climb, or was unaware of the other traffic. The 'see and avoid' concept is alive and well.

Title: THE RPTR, ON A BNA SID DURING CLB SAW A LIGHT WHITE AIRPLANE IN HIS PATH 800 FT ABOVE, MADE AN EVASIVE TURN AND LEVELED TO AVOID THE TFC. THE CTLR STATED HE WENT 900 FT BELOW THE TFC AND THE TFC WAS BEING WORKED BY ANOTHER CTLR.
