Narrative:
After given a crossing restr into rdu, to cross aldan intersection at 8000 ft, the first officer acknowledged the clearance and I left the frequency and got the current WX at rdu and informed the company on the ground of our arrival time and then did the PA to the flight attendant and the passenger. When I returned to the frequency, rdu approach was questioning the clearance with the first officer. He had descended but didn't make the transition turn to the left. We made the hard left and intercepted 13 NM from the VOR. The first officer has been hired at a large air carrier and has been preoccupied with the call of his class date. He had missed things, but this was the first violation. I had to be very vigilant of his flying and cockpit procedures until we completed the 3-DAY trip.
