Narrative:
On mar/tue/96, I walked around aircraft and saw a small black line on the fuselage just forward of the rear bag bin. I came into the maintenance office to get the on duty foreman. The foreman was not in the office. I got mr ab manager of line maintenance to show him the suspected area. He came out to the aircraft and said he would have the aircraft routed to ZZZ to have the spot further investigated for a possible 1 1/2 fuselage crack. I went out to work another flight. Several mins later ab came out and told me he called maintenance control and that dispatch was going to take the aircraft out of service. After I pushed gate Z at XX45 I went down to gate Y and asked the operations agent if we were going to push and he said we were going on time. No word came from either dispatch or maintenance control to take the aircraft OTS. Pushback time (XX50) came and I pushed the aircraft. The aircraft flew to XXX where contract maintenance was called out and verified it was cracked. Aircraft was ferried back to ZZZ for repair.

Title: MECH DISCOVERED A CRACK ON THE FUSELAGE AND BROUGHT IT TO THE ATTN OF HIS MGR OF LINE MAINT. THE MGR TOLD RPTR THAT THE ACFT WAS BEING REMOVED FROM SVC. HOWEVER, WHEN QUESTIONING THE ACFT BEING PUSHED BACK FOR FLT, HE WAS TOLD IT WAS GOING ON TIME. AT THE NEXT ARPT THE CRACK WAS VERIFIED AND THE ACFT FERRIED BACK FOR REPAIR.

AFTER I PUSHED GATE Z AT XX45 I WENT DOWN TO GATE Y AND ASKED THE OPS AGENT IF WE WERE GOING TO PUSH AND HE SAID WE WERE GOING ON TIME. NO WORD CAME FROM EITHER DISPATCH OR MAINT CTL TO TAKE THE ACFT OTS. PUSHBACK TIME (XX50) CAME AND I PUSHED THE ACFT. THE ACFT FLEW TO XXX WHERE CONTRACT MAINT WAS CALLED OUT AND VERIFIED IT WAS CRACKED. ACFT WAS FERRIED BACK TO ZZZ FOR REPAIR.
