Narrative:
During climb on departure from den to slc (B727) on assigned heading of 260 degrees by den departure, while passing 11500 ft MSL airspeed 285 KIAS at the den VOR 285 degree radial, 23 mi, had a near miss with a glider (white with red and blue trim -- 2 people). Aircraft were within 100 ft from each other. Flight was given no notification by departure control of glider activity in this area. A query to departure control verified that they had no knowledge of this activity. Upon seeing the glider flight, climbed at a steeper altitude and made a slight bank to the right to avoid the glider. Suggestion: since this area is normally used for IFR jet departures, this glider activity should be ceased, departure control should be aware of this activity and not route aircraft through this area, or if this is an isolated operation of a single pilot operation in controled airspace, this operation should be sought and prosecuted. This is an extremely dangerous situation for commercial operations with many lives at stake.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B727 FLC MUST TAKE EVASIVE ACTION TO AVOID HITTING A GLIDER AT 11500 FT AT STAKE.
Narrative: DURING CLB ON DEP FROM DEN TO SLC (B727) ON ASSIGNED HDG OF 260 DEGS BY DEN DEP, WHILE PASSING 11500 FT MSL AIRSPD 285 KIAS AT THE DEN VOR 285 DEG RADIAL, 23 MI, HAD A NEAR MISS WITH A GLIDER (WHITE WITH RED AND BLUE TRIM -- 2 PEOPLE). ACFT WERE WITHIN 100 FT FROM EACH OTHER. FLT WAS GIVEN NO NOTIFICATION BY DEP CTL OF GLIDER ACTIVITY IN THIS AREA. A QUERY TO DEP CTL VERIFIED THAT THEY HAD NO KNOWLEDGE OF THIS ACTIVITY. UPON SEEING THE GLIDER FLT, CLBED AT A STEEPER ALT AND MADE A SLIGHT BANK TO THE R TO AVOID THE GLIDER. SUGGESTION: SINCE THIS AREA IS NORMALLY USED FOR IFR JET DEPS, THIS GLIDER ACTIVITY SHOULD BE CEASED, DEP CTL SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS ACTIVITY AND NOT RTE ACFT THROUGH THIS AREA, OR IF THIS IS AN ISOLATED OP OF A SINGLE PLT OP IN CTLED AIRSPACE, THIS OP SHOULD BE SOUGHT AND PROSECUTED. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SIT FOR COMMERCIAL OPS WITH MANY LIVES AT STAKE.
