Narrative:

Climbing out of ewr was given climb to 3000 ft from 2500 ft and immediately thereafter given direct to coate. First officer called 1000 ft to go and entered direct to coate in FMC (I was hand-flying). I started turn to coate and went through 3000 ft to approximately 3360 ft and realized mistake. I immediately stopped the climb and returned to 3000 ft. No comment from ATC. Problem: I anticipated climb. Almost always on that departure a climb to higher is given before direct. Also, I glanced down to see if coate was in and looked back up to arrest ascent just before altitude alert.
