Narrative:
Approach control handed us off to tower for landing clearance. I asked the student if he called the tower, because I was doing something else. He said yes, and he was cleared to land. When we landed, ground said that it was customary to call tower before we land. I guess I should have been paying more attention to what was happening, and I should have asked tower to confirm that we were cleared to land. Supplemental information from acn 330436: as I was on final approach another aircraft radioed the tower. They were told they were second behind a cherokee who didn't want to talk to them. At this time the flight instructor asked me if I radioed the tower and I said yes. After I landed the tower told me I didn't call them. At this time all I said was roger. The tower responded with good answer. My response didn't mean I didn't take this matter lightly, only that I didn't want to tie up the frequency since there was other aircraft in the area.
