Narrative:
Approaching sfo, copilot's leg. Expecting ILS runway 28L from ATIS, vectored to ILS runway 28L, and cleared for ILS runway 28L by approach, shot ILS runway 28L to sfo, WX 1700 ft broken 10 mi visibility. Upon check in with tower we were switched to runway 28R following traffic call and landing clearance. Preoccupied with traffic and re-engaging ILS mode on balky flight director, we missed the word 'right' and continued for the left. I said, 'roger the traffic, cleared to land in sequence.' my phraseology led the controller to believe I had heard correctly when in fact I had not. Had I confirmed the runway designator as per normal procedure, the chain of events would have been broken by the controller realizing my error and correcting me. I cleared runway 28L clueless and was informed of my mistake after contacting tower via the land line per their request. This was my third all-nighter in 4 days which perhaps contributed to my inattentiveness. I will concentrate on proper phraseology and read back all runway designators in the future.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ON ILS APCH TO RWY 28L, TWR CHANGED RWY FOR RPTR ACFT ON FINAL TO RWY 28R PLUS ISSUED TFC TO FOLLOW. RPTR FLC MISSED INSTRUCTIONS TO LAND ON RWY 28R AND LANDED ON THE L. RPTR CAPT ATTRIBUTES FATIGUE TO THE MISSED CLRNC CHANGE BECAUSE OF THE 3 ALL-NIGHT FLTS IN 4 DAYS.
Narrative: APCHING SFO, COPLT'S LEG. EXPECTING ILS RWY 28L FROM ATIS, VECTORED TO ILS RWY 28L, AND CLRED FOR ILS RWY 28L BY APCH, SHOT ILS RWY 28L TO SFO, WX 1700 FT BROKEN 10 MI VISIBILITY. UPON CHK IN WITH TWR WE WERE SWITCHED TO RWY 28R FOLLOWING TFC CALL AND LNDG CLRNC. PREOCCUPIED WITH TFC AND RE-ENGAGING ILS MODE ON BALKY FLT DIRECTOR, WE MISSED THE WORD 'RIGHT' AND CONTINUED FOR THE L. I SAID, 'ROGER THE TFC, CLRED TO LAND IN SEQUENCE.' MY PHRASEOLOGY LED THE CTLR TO BELIEVE I HAD HEARD CORRECTLY WHEN IN FACT I HAD NOT. HAD I CONFIRMED THE RWY DESIGNATOR AS PER NORMAL PROC, THE CHAIN OF EVENTS WOULD HAVE BEEN BROKEN BY THE CTLR REALIZING MY ERROR AND CORRECTING ME. I CLRED RWY 28L CLUELESS AND WAS INFORMED OF MY MISTAKE AFTER CONTACTING TWR VIA THE LAND LINE PER THEIR REQUEST. THIS WAS MY THIRD ALL-NIGHTER IN 4 DAYS WHICH PERHAPS CONTRIBUTED TO MY INATTENTIVENESS. I WILL CONCENTRATE ON PROPER PHRASEOLOGY AND READ BACK ALL RWY DESIGNATORS IN THE FUTURE.
