Narrative:
During afternoon 'bank' of arrs and departures at charlotte- douglas international airport we were cleared for takeoff on runway 36L. Tower was basing takeoff clearance on preceding landing aircraft clearing runway at a certain intersection. The aircraft ahead was unable to clear the runway where tower thought he would, he had already cleared us for takeoff, so he canceled our takeoff clearance. We were at no more than taxi speed, very early in our takeoff roll. We got back in line, checked our fuel and took off normally, just a little later. With the crowding in of arrs and departures at major airports, as long as tower uses this sort of procedure, ie, clearing aircraft to land or takeoff before the runway is actually clear, there will be occasional gars and low speed takeoff aborts. In my opinion this is not unsafe as long as everyone remains aware of what's going on.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF AN LGT ABORTED TKOF DUE TO ANOTHER ACFT NOT CLRING THE RWY AS EXPECTED BY TWR.
Narrative: DURING AFTERNOON 'BANK' OF ARRS AND DEPS AT CHARLOTTE- DOUGLAS INTL ARPT WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF ON RWY 36L. TWR WAS BASING TKOF CLRNC ON PRECEDING LNDG ACFT CLRING RWY AT A CERTAIN INTXN. THE ACFT AHEAD WAS UNABLE TO CLR THE RWY WHERE TWR THOUGHT HE WOULD, HE HAD ALREADY CLRED US FOR TKOF, SO HE CANCELED OUR TKOF CLRNC. WE WERE AT NO MORE THAN TAXI SPD, VERY EARLY IN OUR TKOF ROLL. WE GOT BACK IN LINE, CHKED OUR FUEL AND TOOK OFF NORMALLY, JUST A LITTLE LATER. WITH THE CROWDING IN OF ARRS AND DEPS AT MAJOR ARPTS, AS LONG AS TWR USES THIS SORT OF PROC, IE, CLRING ACFT TO LAND OR TKOF BEFORE THE RWY IS ACTUALLY CLR, THERE WILL BE OCCASIONAL GARS AND LOW SPD TKOF ABORTS. IN MY OPINION THIS IS NOT UNSAFE AS LONG AS EVERYONE REMAINS AWARE OF WHAT'S GOING ON.
