Narrative:

During 'before start ground power' checklist, captain noticed his ivsi appeared inoperative. At completion of checklist, captain asked mechanics, who were outside aircraft to check instrument. Mechanics said ivsi can be deferred and continued to do so. We departed and on our return trip to miami, operations told us that mechanics are meeting us in miami. Upon arrival, mechanics replaced ivsi and deferred item was cleared. Following day, management told us captain's ivsi cannot be deferred. Only the copilot's ivsi is deferrable for day VMC only. The MEL was misread.
