Narrative:
Cleared after takeoff to 8000 ft while in left turn to 020 degrees. It was choppy and I was hand flying. Normally, I am cleared to 10000 ft and this was fixed in my mind. As I passed through 8000 ft I remembered the clearance and pulled the power back and dropped the nose. It was cool and I was climbing at a good rate and went several hundred ft above the clearance. The controller noticed our altitude and commented about the 8000 ft, and then cleared us to 10000 ft. I turned the autoplt on and proceeded with the trip. There was another aircraft out there which must have been the reason for the 8000 ft clearance to be issued. There was no indication that I came close to the other aircraft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DURING THE DEP CLB, A CORPORATE FLC OVERSHOT THEIR ASSIGNED ALT. AS THEY WERE CORRECTING, THE DEP CTLR STATED THEIR ORIGINAL ASSIGNMENT OF 8000 FT, AND THEN CLRED THE ACFT TO 10000 FT.
Narrative: CLRED AFTER TKOF TO 8000 FT WHILE IN L TURN TO 020 DEGS. IT WAS CHOPPY AND I WAS HAND FLYING. NORMALLY, I AM CLRED TO 10000 FT AND THIS WAS FIXED IN MY MIND. AS I PASSED THROUGH 8000 FT I REMEMBERED THE CLRNC AND PULLED THE PWR BACK AND DROPPED THE NOSE. IT WAS COOL AND I WAS CLBING AT A GOOD RATE AND WENT SEVERAL HUNDRED FT ABOVE THE CLRNC. THE CTLR NOTICED OUR ALT AND COMMENTED ABOUT THE 8000 FT, AND THEN CLRED US TO 10000 FT. I TURNED THE AUTOPLT ON AND PROCEEDED WITH THE TRIP. THERE WAS ANOTHER ACFT OUT THERE WHICH MUST HAVE BEEN THE REASON FOR THE 8000 FT CLRNC TO BE ISSUED. THERE WAS NO INDICATION THAT I CAME CLOSE TO THE OTHER ACFT.
