Narrative:
After departing jfk and given 2 different departures, we finally were given an intercept heading of about 75 degrees to intercept J174 toward swl VOR. While hand flying the aircraft we were abeam the FMS routing by about 16 mi, and almost at a 90 degree turn to the outbound course with nearly 100 KT tailwind. Several mi from the intercept, I engaged the autoplt in order to pay more attention to other details. With LNAV armed the aircraft flew through the airway, never capturing, and I manually selected heading select to return to the airway course. We only ran through the airway a few mi, but it could have been more had we gotten busy -- thinking the autoplt was going to work properly. Possible problem was active waypoint being our position and not switching at the right moment.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR B767 FLC FLEW THROUGH THE AIRWAY THAT THEY WERE VECTORED TO INTERCEPT. THE PF PROGRAMMED THE FMS, BUT GOT BUSY WITH OTHER TASKS AND DID NOT NOTICE THAT THE AUTOPLT DID NOT INTERCEPT THE AIRWAY UNTIL A FEW MI LATER.
