Narrative:
Flying yng-ewc VOR-agc, decided to go southwest of greater pit airport instead of northeast. Glanced at sectional, saw I'd be under class B airspace and didn't realize there were any twred airports on this route. Being quite concerned about how close I was to greater pit, I was looking at chart, then looked up and realized I about 1/2 mi from a paved airport. No situational awareness. I had no idea which one it was, so couldn't call them, etc. Immediately turned away from the field and turned on autoplt while I examined sectional more closely. Eventually found the airport on the chart but was already about 10 mi away by then. Preventing recurrence -- only fly flight planned rtes! No sudden decisions to go a different way when in unfamiliar territory. Closer attention to ground features and location. Also, not get so 'rusty' -- I'd flown only about 5 hours in the past 3 months.
