Narrative:
I was cleared for departure on runway 14 at pfn in a C172 going on a sightseeing flight. I applied full throttle, noticed a pretty good crosswind, 180 degrees 13 KTS (information yy on ATIS.) I noticed the airplane was not accelerating as fast as normal, but it was a relatively warm day (78 degrees F information yy), so I did not pay too much attention to it considering I had 6300 ft of runway to use. Lift-off into ground effect was normal. When I began the climb out, the airspeed indicator was above vy, but I noticed mushy control movements. I do not know if I experienced a power loss or a windshear, but I was not climbing. I assessed the situation and determined I could not climb high enough to execute a traffic pattern, and there was not enough usable runway available, so I decided to head for the clear zone. I executed a soft field landing on the grass, shut down engine, fuel, electronics before touchdown and rolled to a stop. I did have to change my direction on the ground to avoid a fence. There were no injuries, no damage to the aircraft, no damage to any property.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: THE ACFT WOULD NOT ACCELERATE NORMALLY ON TKOF ROLL OR CLB AFTER LIFT-OFF. THE OAT WAS 78 DEGS. THE ARPT WAS SEA LEVEL. THE RPTR THOUGHT HE EITHER HAD A LACK OF PWR OR WINDSHEAR.
Narrative: I WAS CLRED FOR DEP ON RWY 14 AT PFN IN A C172 GOING ON A SIGHTSEEING FLT. I APPLIED FULL THROTTLE, NOTICED A PRETTY GOOD XWIND, 180 DEGS 13 KTS (INFO YY ON ATIS.) I NOTICED THE AIRPLANE WAS NOT ACCELERATING AS FAST AS NORMAL, BUT IT WAS A RELATIVELY WARM DAY (78 DEGS F INFO YY), SO I DID NOT PAY TOO MUCH ATTN TO IT CONSIDERING I HAD 6300 FT OF RWY TO USE. LIFT-OFF INTO GND EFFECT WAS NORMAL. WHEN I BEGAN THE CLB OUT, THE AIRSPD INDICATOR WAS ABOVE VY, BUT I NOTICED MUSHY CTL MOVEMENTS. I DO NOT KNOW IF I EXPERIENCED A PWR LOSS OR A WINDSHEAR, BUT I WAS NOT CLBING. I ASSESSED THE SIT AND DETERMINED I COULD NOT CLB HIGH ENOUGH TO EXECUTE A TFC PATTERN, AND THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH USABLE RWY AVAILABLE, SO I DECIDED TO HEAD FOR THE CLR ZONE. I EXECUTED A SOFT FIELD LNDG ON THE GRASS, SHUT DOWN ENG, FUEL, ELECTRONICS BEFORE TOUCHDOWN AND ROLLED TO A STOP. I DID HAVE TO CHANGE MY DIRECTION ON THE GND TO AVOID A FENCE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES, NO DAMAGE TO THE ACFT, NO DAMAGE TO ANY PROPERTY.
