After electrical smoke was eliminated by shutting down unnecessary components the reporter lowered the gear and the left gear would not indicate down and locked. The reporter notified the tower, made a fly-by and tower advised the gear appeared down. Tower declared an emergency and the emergency crash trucks were activated. The landing was uneventful.

Narrative:
On a VFR flight from nantucket ack to morristown mmu. While 4 mi northeast of mmu odor of burning electrical was detected in the cabin. Unnecessary electrical was shut down. When this was done smell dissipated. When gear down was selected left main would not indicate down locked. Notified tower, made low approach. Tower advised, gear appeared down. Circled mmu while fire equipment was called. Tower declared emergency. Landed uneventfully.
