The reporter inquired with ground control about a '600 ft cutback on runway 27 and where to taxi on the runway.' after switching to tower frequency the reporter heard the tower clear the flight to taxi onto the runway to the hold bar. Subsequently, the flight was told to clear the runway to the right they were not cleared onto the runway.

Narrative:
During taxi from gate X to runway 27, we requested from ground control, information about the 600 ft cutback on runway 27 and where we were to taxi on to the runway. After switching to tower frequency tower cleared us to taxi on to the runway to the hold bar. After taxiing into position, we were told to clear the runway to the right and that we were not cleared onto the runway. If standard terminology were used by all controllers when issuing clrncs there would be less chance of confusion.

Narrative: DURING TAXI FROM GATE X TO RWY 27, WE REQUESTED FROM GND CTL, INFO ABOUT THE 600 FT CUTBACK ON RWY 27 AND WHERE WE WERE TO TAXI ON TO THE RWY. AFTER SWITCHING TO TWR FREQ TWR CLRED US TO TAXI ON TO THE RWY TO THE HOLD BAR. AFTER TAXIING INTO POS, WE WERE TOLD TO CLR THE RWY TO THE R AND THAT WE WERE NOT CLRED ONTO THE RWY. IF STANDARD TERMINOLOGY WERE USED BY ALL CTLRS WHEN ISSUING CLRNCS THERE WOULD BE LESS CHANCE OF CONFUSION.
