Narrative:
Turned 2 NM late at vills intersection heading south and dialed in 46 degree radial of salisbury instead of 26 degree radial by mistake. Knowing it was a late turn and winds were high near a low pressure system, I figured I needed a larger cut to reintercept. We were 5-10 mi off course when we realized the problem and started a correction. At the same time ATC called to make sure we were headed to salisbury. The assumption I had the correct radial dialed in was the underlying problem.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC TURNS LATE AT INTXN, THEN SETS WRONG RADIAL ON VOR AND ENDS UP OFF COURSE BY 5-10 MI.
Narrative: TURNED 2 NM LATE AT VILLS INTXN HEADING S AND DIALED IN 46 DEG RADIAL OF SALISBURY INSTEAD OF 26 DEG RADIAL BY MISTAKE. KNOWING IT WAS A LATE TURN AND WINDS WERE HIGH NEAR A LOW PRESSURE SYS, I FIGURED I NEEDED A LARGER CUT TO REINTERCEPT. WE WERE 5-10 MI OFF COURSE WHEN WE REALIZED THE PROB AND STARTED A CORRECTION. AT THE SAME TIME ATC CALLED TO MAKE SURE WE WERE HEADED TO SALISBURY. THE ASSUMPTION I HAD THE CORRECT RADIAL DIALED IN WAS THE UNDERLYING PROB.
