Narrative:

During a post maintenance check flight from a familiar field on an unfamiliar flight plan, I was headed for W-158 and copied an incorrect frequency. Assigned a heading of 90 degrees, jax approach gave me a switch to 'sealord' on UHF. I was unable to contact 'sealord' and we went back to jax approach for the correct frequency. I turned left to 360 degrees to parallel W-158 until we were in communications with sealord. Jax approach told me to turn east and we contacted sealord. A few mins later, sealord relayed from jax approach that we should maintain last assigned heading when lost communication. I lost my frequency assigned and did not want to penetrate W-158 airspace without contacting sealord first. I am positive I repeated the incorrect frequency back to jax approach. Thousands of frequency changes are made daily and this was one of the hundreds of miscoms.

Original NASA ASRS Text

Title: THE RPTR WAS ASSIGNED A 90 DEG HDG IFR TOWARDS A WARNING AREA AND TOLD TO CONTACT THE RANGE CTL ON A WRONG UHF FREQ. THE DELAY RESEARCHING THE CORRECT FREQ WOULD CARRY THE RPTR INTO THE WARNING AREA WHILE NOT YET IN CONTACT WITH THE RANGE OFFICER. THE RPTR ELECTED TO TURN SO AS TO REMAIN CLR OF THE WARNING AREA UNTIL COMS WERE ESTABLISHED WITH THE RANGE OFFICER. THE JAX APCH SAID THE RPTR SHOULD HAVE MAINTAINED THE LAST ASSIGNED HDG EVEN THOUGH THE FLT WOULD GO INTO THE WARNING AREA.

Narrative: DURING A POST MAINT CHK FLT FROM A FAMILIAR FIELD ON AN UNFAMILIAR FLT PLAN, I WAS HEADED FOR W-158 AND COPIED AN INCORRECT FREQ. ASSIGNED A HDG OF 90 DEGS, JAX APCH GAVE ME A SWITCH TO 'SEALORD' ON UHF. I WAS UNABLE TO CONTACT 'SEALORD' AND WE WENT BACK TO JAX APCH FOR THE CORRECT FREQ. I TURNED L TO 360 DEGS TO PARALLEL W-158 UNTIL WE WERE IN COMS WITH SEALORD. JAX APCH TOLD ME TO TURN E AND WE CONTACTED SEALORD. A FEW MINS LATER, SEALORD RELAYED FROM JAX APCH THAT WE SHOULD MAINTAIN LAST ASSIGNED HDG WHEN LOST COM. I LOST MY FREQ ASSIGNED AND DID NOT WANT TO PENETRATE W-158 AIRSPACE WITHOUT CONTACTING SEALORD FIRST. I AM POSITIVE I REPEATED THE INCORRECT FREQ BACK TO JAX APCH. THOUSANDS OF FREQ CHANGES ARE MADE DAILY AND THIS WAS ONE OF THE HUNDREDS OF MISCOMS.
