Narrative:
Gear door open light remained on after takeoff, followed abnormal procedure with no help. Called dispatch and maintenance control. Recycled gear per maintenance control, no help. Light remained on with gear up or down. With gear extended, captain confirmed gear doors closed via mid cabin periscope. Normal landing performed. Postscript: logbook history showed previous history of gear door light with doors confirmed closed. Signoff was 'unable to duplicate/cycled gear several times.' conclusion: 1) maintenance could have saved company money and crew would not have had to orbit lga at 3000 ft MSL while confirming gear door position if maintenance had done precautionary switch change. 2) everyone seemed to expect crew to declare emergency. We did not. Crash fire rescue equipment was called out anyway by lga tower. Once we confirmed gear door closed for landing this was abnormal not emergency. Leave something to crew please.

Title: FLC OF DC9-30 HAS GEAR DOOR LIGHT ACTIVATE REMAIN ON AFTER TKOF WHEN GEAR DOORS CONFIRMED CLOSED BY PERISCOPE VIEW.
Narrative: GEAR DOOR OPEN LIGHT REMAINED ON AFTER TKOF, FOLLOWED ABNORMAL PROC WITH NO HELP. CALLED DISPATCH AND MAINT CTL. RECYCLED GEAR PER MAINT CTL, NO HELP. LIGHT REMAINED ON WITH GEAR UP OR DOWN. WITH GEAR EXTENDED, CAPT CONFIRMED GEAR DOORS CLOSED VIA MID CABIN PERISCOPE. NORMAL LNDG PERFORMED. POSTSCRIPT: LOGBOOK HISTORY SHOWED PREVIOUS HISTORY OF GEAR DOOR LIGHT WITH DOORS CONFIRMED CLOSED. SIGNOFF WAS 'UNABLE TO DUPLICATE/CYCLED GEAR SEVERAL TIMES.' CONCLUSION: 1) MAINT COULD HAVE SAVED COMPANY MONEY AND CREW WOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO ORBIT LGA AT 3000 FT MSL WHILE CONFIRMING GEAR DOOR POS IF MAINT HAD DONE PRECAUTIONARY SWITCH CHANGE. 2) EVERYONE SEEMED TO EXPECT CREW TO DECLARE EMER. WE DID NOT. CFR WAS CALLED OUT ANYWAY BY LGA TWR. ONCE WE CONFIRMED GEAR DOOR CLOSED FOR LNDG THIS WAS ABNORMAL NOT EMER. LEAVE SOMETHING TO CREW PLEASE.
