Narrative:
Problem arose as a result of similar call signs -- air carrier X abc and air carrier X aac, plus a long crew duty day. ATC cleared air carrier X abc to an ILS runway 8L, contact tower at the marker. Near the marker, air carrier X aac cleared approach to runway 9R. First officer heard air carrier X abc and maneuvered toward runway 9R, PNF heard air carrier X aac, so was busy with panel and he was not sure. By the time CRM procedures were put into effect we had leveled off at approximately 2700 ft MSL and were abeam runway 9L. An evasive maneuver was initiated by captain back toward runway 8L after our clearance was clarified. More needs to be done about similar call signs operating within the TCA. I have tried by the way, I say the callsign, ie, air carrier X (ab)-(C) instead of air carrier X (a)-(back course), but ATC does not respond in this manner.

Title: FO RESPONDED TO A SIMILAR SOUNDING CALL SIGN BY FLYING A CLRNC ISSUED TO ANOTHER ACFT. CAPT HEARD CALL SIGN DIFFERENTLY AND CORRECTED FO MISTAKE AND CLARIFIED THE CLRNC WITH ATC.
Narrative: PROB AROSE AS A RESULT OF SIMILAR CALL SIGNS -- ACR X ABC AND ACR X AAC, PLUS A LONG CREW DUTY DAY. ATC CLRED ACR X ABC TO AN ILS RWY 8L, CONTACT TWR AT THE MARKER. NEAR THE MARKER, ACR X AAC CLRED APCH TO RWY 9R. FO HEARD ACR X ABC AND MANEUVERED TOWARD RWY 9R, PNF HEARD ACR X AAC, SO WAS BUSY WITH PANEL AND HE WAS NOT SURE. BY THE TIME CRM PROCS WERE PUT INTO EFFECT WE HAD LEVELED OFF AT APPROX 2700 FT MSL AND WERE ABEAM RWY 9L. AN EVASIVE MANEUVER WAS INITIATED BY CAPT BACK TOWARD RWY 8L AFTER OUR CLRNC WAS CLARIFIED. MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT SIMILAR CALL SIGNS OPERATING WITHIN THE TCA. I HAVE TRIED BY THE WAY, I SAY THE CALLSIGN, IE, ACR X (AB)-(C) INSTEAD OF ACR X (A)-(BC), BUT ATC DOES NOT RESPOND IN THIS MANNER.
