Narrative:
While taking off from our company heliport, I crossed the approach end of runway 21 at gcn. I mistakenly thought I was cleared to cross. At the same time a twin cessna was on short final, my aircraft passing in front of him, surprising the cessna pilot. Our company is operating out of a new facility which is approximately 200 yards northeast of the approach end of runway 21 at gcn. It is SOP to cross the runway for our departures in this manner. Just prior to takeoff I was trying to resolve a problem with 3 mon english speaking passenger in the aft cabin. This was a distraction. While receiving my takeoff clearance from the tower, I mistook the tower's instructions 'cleared for departure' as 'cleared to cross the runway.' as of this writing, our company is working with gcn tower on improving phraseology (there have been several similar miscoms with our departing helicopters prior to this one).
