Narrative:
During climb out from atl, heading 280 degrees, approximately 3000 ft MSL, ATC gave us a maximum speed of 230 KTS. We were then given a turn to 360 degrees, altitude approximately 6000 ft MSL. After turning, we asked if ATC still required a speed of 230 KTS. The controller responded, 'no you can go to 250 maximum.' we as a crew assumed 250 KTS below 10000 ft. The copilot responded, 'ok, back to 250 KTS.' normal climb out profile was followed and acceleration at 10000 ft to 325 KTS was started. At approximately 12500 ft a different voice (ATC controller) asked our airspeed. The copilot responded 325 KTS. The controller said he wanted us at 250 KTS. The aircraft was slowed to 250 KIAS and shortly after resumed normal climb out speed as directed by ATC. No conflicts were apparent.

Narrative: DURING CLBOUT FROM ATL, HDG 280 DEGS, APPROX 3000 FT MSL, ATC GAVE US A MAX SPD OF 230 KTS. WE WERE THEN GIVEN A TURN TO 360 DEGS, ALT APPROX 6000 FT MSL. AFTER TURNING, WE ASKED IF ATC STILL REQUIRED A SPD OF 230 KTS. THE CTLR RESPONDED, 'NO YOU CAN GO TO 250 MAX.' WE AS A CREW ASSUMED 250 KTS BELOW 10000 FT. THE COPLT RESPONDED, 'OK, BACK TO 250 KTS.' NORMAL CLBOUT PROFILE WAS FOLLOWED AND ACCELERATION AT 10000 FT TO 325 KTS WAS STARTED. AT APPROX 12500 FT A DIFFERENT VOICE (ATC CTLR) ASKED OUR AIRSPD. THE COPLT RESPONDED 325 KTS. THE CTLR SAID HE WANTED US AT 250 KTS. THE ACFT WAS SLOWED TO 250 KIAS AND SHORTLY AFTER RESUMED NORMAL CLBOUT SPD AS DIRECTED BY ATC. NO CONFLICTS WERE APPARENT.
