Narrative:
Cleared for the approach to runway 4R when we were approximately 30 mi from ord and at 9000 ft. Degan is 23 DME from ord. Naper was the active waypoint on FMS. I looked at distance to the waypoint naper (20 mi) and interpreted it as DME thus concluding we were inside degan. Asked for altitude to be set at 5000 ft. While descending through 7000 ft approach control called and pointed out deviation. Remainder of approach uneventful. Contributing factors: 1) high level of radio chatter, 2) habit pattern of extending the final fix on visual approachs wipes out other fixes which causes you to use DME. (No problem most of the time, but DME was not associated with the ILS frequency tuned), 3) other crew member did not back up PF adequately, and 4) low time on glass. Supplemental information from acn 336880: by not having degan displayed on our FMS map, this problem occurred.
