Narrative:
While at cruise at FL230, center gave us a vector to go around the MOA. In the same clearance he also said he can give us FL240 and let us go direct. We said FL240 would be great. Center then started talking to some military aircraft in the MOA. We started the climb to FL240. Passing through FL237 center told us to descend to FL230 and that we were not cleared to FL240. Center stated we would have to get that clearance from the next controller. That seemed to contradict his initial statement that he could give us FL240. I feel poor communication and verification of clearance on both sides played a part in the deviation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: WHILE AT CRUISE AT FL230 CTR ASSIGNED A VECTOR AROUND A MOA AND IN THE SAME CLRNC HE ALSO SAID HE CAN GIVE THE FLC FL240 AND LET THEM GO DIRECT. THE FLC SAID THAT WOULD BE GREAT AND COMMENCED THEIR CLB TO FL240. PASSING THROUGH FL237 CTR SAID TO DSND TO FL230 AND THEY WERE NOT CLRED TO FL240.

CTR THEN STARTED TALKING TO SOME MIL ACFT IN THE MOA. WE STARTED THE CLB TO FL240. PASSING THROUGH FL237 CTR TOLD US TO DSND TO FL230 AND THAT WE WERE NOT CLRED TO FL240. I FEEL POOR COM AND VERIFICATION OF CLRNC ON BOTH SIDES PLAYED A PART IN THE DEV.
